Cherry Mittens Pattern #PC-1346

MATERIALS:
Chadwick's Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 2 balls (1 oz. balls) of White for size 6; 3 balls for size 7; and 1 ball each of Red and Green for all sizes for trim.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.

GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 3 rows make 1 inch.

Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Dc in each sc across. Ch 3, turn. 4th row: Yarn over hook, insert hook from front to back of work between 1st 2 dc and bring it out between 2nd and 3rd dc, yarn over hook and draw a loop through, finish as for a dc—front dc made around post of dc below—(this will be referred to as a front dc); yarn over hook, insert hook from back of work to front of work between 2nd and 3rd dc and bring it out between this and next dc at back of work, yarn over and draw a loop through. Finish as for a dc—back dc made around post of dc below—(this will be referred to as a back dc). * Front dc around next dc. Back dc around next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with a front dc around turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 5th row: Skip 1st dc, * back dc around next dc, front dc around next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with a back dc around turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 6th row: Skip 1st dc, * front dc around next dc, back dc around next dc. Repeat from * across, ending with a front dc around turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 7th and 8th rows: Repeat 6th and 7th rows. Drop yarn after last row. Overlap the two side edges (right over left), 4 sts in from each side and sew in place (4 sts decreased), leaving an opening of ¾ inch at lower edge.
Work is now done in rounds instead of rows. Work around, keeping in pattern for

working through both thicknesses when work reaches overlap.
On next rnd start shaping for Thumb. Place piece on a flat surface, having opening on top and to the left. Mark opposite top edge with a safety pin for Thumb increases. Work as follows: 1st rnd: Work in pattern to pin mark, then in space between last st and next st make 2 dc (2 sts increased). Mark these 2 sts with a colored thread. Complete rnd in pattern. 2nd rnd: Work in pattern without increasing. 3rd rnd: Work in pattern to marker, inc 2 sts on each side of marker as before (6 sts now made for Thumb). Work in pattern to end of rnd. Work in pattern, increasing 2 sts on each side of previous thumb increases every other rnd until there are for Thumb

Lay Mitten on a flat surface and divide stitches evenly. Mark the 2 sides with pins where decreases are to be made. * Work in pattern to marker, then dec 2 sts—to dec 2 sts, work off 2 sts as 1 st twice. Repeat from * once more and complete rnd. Repeat the last rnd, always making decreases over previous decreases until there remain

Break off. Sew opening neatly together across top.
Thumb … Attach yarn and work in pattern around thumb sts until Thumb when Mitten is tried on reaches ¼ inch from tip. On next rnd make sc in each st around. Continue to make sc in each sc, decreasing every other sc until there remain

Break off, leaving a 6-inch length of yarn. Sew opening neatly together.
RIGHT HAND … Make another Mitten exactly as Left Hand, turn inside out to fit Right Hand.
EMBROIDERY … Thread a needle with Green yarn and embroider a few stems in stem stitch on center back of mitten.
CHERRY (Make 15) … With Red yarn ch 3, join. 1st rnd: 6 sc in ring. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd rnd: * Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * until piece measures ¾ inch. Break off, leaving a long end of yarn. Thread a needle with this end and make small running stitches around edge of this circle. Stuff center with odd yarn or cotton batting. Pull running stitches up tightly and fasten securely. Sew cherries to center of stems. Finish other mitten to correspond, reversing colors for stems and cherries.
