Use thread double throughout.
Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring. Ch 1 (to count as 1 s c). 1st rnd: 5 s c in ring. Join with sl st to ch-1. Ch 1, turn. 2nd rnd: From here on, pick up back loop of s c's. S c in back loop of 1st st, and 2 s c in each of next 5 sts. Join with sl st, ch 1, turn. 3rd rnd: S c in 1st st next to the ch-1. (This forms the increasing at that point.) * S c in next st, 2 s c in next, repeat from *, making 18 sts in this rnd. Continue in this way for each rnd, making 6 increases to each rnd at the points of the preceding rnd. Make 9 ribs (2 rnds form a rib). Fasten off and make another the same.
Sew 2 sides together as in illustration. Make 2 triangular pieces as follows: Ch 3. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook and s c in next st. Ch 2, turn. 2nd row: 2 s c in back loop of 2nd st from hook, s c in next, 2 s c in next. Ch 2, turn. Continue in this way, working 2 s c at the beginning and end of each row and ch 2, turn, until piece fits triangular section of mat. Sew in place.
