GAUGE: Each motif measures 1⅜ inches square.

FIRST MOTIF … Starting at center, ch 9. Join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 4, holding back on hook the last loop of each tr make 2 tr in ring, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made); (ch 6, tr in tip of last cluster, 3-tr cluster in ring) 7 times; ch 6, tr in tip of last cluster, sl st in first cluster. 2nd rnd: * In next loop make 3 sc, ch 6 and 3 sc; sc in tip of next cluster, ch 5, in next loop make a 3-tr cluster, ch 5, dc in tip of last cluster and 3-tr cluster; ch 5, sc in tip of next cluster. Repeat from * around. Join and break off.

SECOND MOTIF … Work 1st rnd of First Motif. 2nd rnd: In next loop make 3 sc, ch 6 and 3 sc; sc in tip of next cluster, ch 5, 3-tr cluster in next loop, ch 2, sl st in corresponding loop of First Motif, ch 2, dc in tip of last cluster of Second Motif, 3-tr cluster in same loop as last cluster of Second Motif, ch 5, sc in tip of next cluster, 3 sc in next loop, ch 3, sl st in corresponding loop on First Motif, ch 3, 3 sc in same loop on Second Motif, sc in tip of next cluster, ch 5, 3-tr cluster in next loop, ch 2, sl st in corresponding loop of First Motif, ch 2, dc in tip of last cluster on Second Motif and complete as for First Motif (no more joinings).
   Make 9 rows of 13 motifs, joining adjacent sides as Second Motif was joined to First Motif. Where four corners meet, join the third and fourth corners to joining of first and second corners.
