J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, 3 balls of White, Ecru or any color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 10 or 11.
GAUGE: Each motif measures about 3 x 3¾ inches across center. Completed tray mat measures about 11½ x 19 inches.
FIRST STRIP (First Motif) … Starting at center, ch 23, half d c in 6th ch from hook; (ch 1, skip 1 ch, d c in next ch) twice; (ch 1, skip 1 ch, tr in next ch) twice; (ch 1, skip 1 ch, d c in next ch) twice; ch 1, skip 1 ch, half d c in next ch, ch 2, sl st in last ch. Work is now done in rnds. 1st rnd: Ch 1, 2 s c in same place as sl st, 2 s c in next sp, s c in next st; (s c in next ch-1, s c in next st) 7 times; 2 s c in ch-5, 3 s c in 3rd ch of same ch-5, 2 s c in same ch-5, s c in next st; (s c in next ch-1, s c in next st) 7 times; 2 s c in ch-5, sl st in 1st ch. 2nd rnd: Ch 1, s c in next (end) s c; make a p as follows: ch 6, s c in 5th ch from hook; make 3 more p's, ch 13, remove hook, insert it in 2nd ch from last p made and draw loop of chain through; into loop just made make s c, half d c and 3 d c; ch 5, sl st in last d c—a p made; (3 d c in loop, p) 4 times; make 3 d c, half d c and s c in same loop, sl st at base of loop; (p, s c between next 2 p's) 3 times; ch-5 p, s c over next ch-1, sl st in last s c of oval, s c in same place as sl st, s c in next 2 s c; * (ch 1, p) 4 times, ch 13, remove hook, insert it in 2nd ch from last p made and draw last ch through; into loop just made make s c, half d c and 3 d c; sl st in last p of previous ch-13 loop; into second ch-13 loop make (3 d c, p) 4 times; make 3 d c, half d c and s c in same loop; sl st at base of loop; (ch-5 p, s c between next 2 p's) 3 times; ch-5 p, s c in next ch-1, between next p and oval; sl st in last s c of oval, s c in next 4 s c. Repeat from * 2 more times, but make 5 s c instead of 4 s c between p-loops. Make another p-loop, ending with 4 s c; make another p-loop, ending with 2 s c; make another p-loop, and work other half of rnd to correspond with first half, joining 1st and last p's of p-loop in order to complete joining of motif (12 loops in rnd). Fasten off.
Make another motif like this, joining the center p of center p-loop at one side to corresponding p of 1st motif.
Make 4 more motifs, joining as second was joined to first.
SECOND STRIP (First Motif) … Work as for second motif of first strip, joining the 2nd and 3rd p's of 2nd p-loop to 6th and 7th free p's (counting from joining) on second motif of first strip; also joining 3rd and 4th p's of last p-loop to 6th and 7th free p's of first motif of first strip. Join last p to 1st p made, and complete rnd.
SECOND MOTIF … Join to second and third motifs, as first motif was joined to first and second motifs; also join center p of center loop to corresponding p of first motif of second strip.
Continue in this manner until there are 5 motifs on 2nd strip. Make 5 more motifs for one more strip, alternating and joining them as before to opposite side of first strip. Fasten off.
Fill in all spaces between motifs as follows: Attach thread to center p of one free loop; (ch 8, s c in center p of next free loop) twice; ch 6, sl st in p where thread was attached. Fasten off.
EDGING … Attach thread to center p-loop at one end of first strip. 1st rnd: ** (Ch 20, s c in center p of next loop) twice; ch 20, tr in center p of next loop, tr in corresponding p of next motif; (ch 20, s c in center p of next loop) 5 times. * Ch 16, tr in center p of next loop, tr in corresponding p of next motif, ch 16, s c in center p of next loop; (ch 20, s c in center p of next loop) twice. Repeat from * 2 more times, ch 16, tr in center p of next loop, tr in corresponding p on next motif, ch 16, s c in center of next loop; (ch 20, s c in next loop) 4 times; ch 20, tr in center p of next loop, tr in corresponding p of next motif; (ch 20, s c in center p of next loop) 3 times. Repeat from ** once more. 2nd rnd: Make 23 s c over each ch-20 loop, and 16 s c over each ch-16 loop. 3rd rnd: Sl st in next 3 s c of 1st loop, ch 6; * (ch-5 p, ch 1, skip 2 s c, tr in next s c) 6 times; skip 2 s c of next loop, tr in next s c. Repeat from * once more; (ch-5 p, ch 1, skip 2 s c, tr in next s c) 5 times; tr in 6th s c of next loop; (p, ch 1, skip 2 s c, tr in next s c) 5 times; tr in 3rd s c on next loop. ** (P, ch 1, skip 2 s c, tr in next s c) 6 times; tr in 3rd s c on next loop. Repeat from ** 3 more times. **** (P, ch 1, skip 2 s c, tr in next s c) 3 times, tr in 5th s c of next loop; (p, ch 1, skip 2 s c, tr in next s c) 3 times; tr in 3rd s c of next loop; *** (p, ch 1, skip 2 s c, tr in next s c) 6 times; tr in 3rd s c of next loop. Repeat from *** once more. Then repeat from **** to within next corner and complete rnd to correspond with opposite end. Fasten off.
