COATS & CLARK'S O.N.T. "SPEED-CRO-SHEEN" MERCERIZED COTTON, Art. C.44: 1 ball each of No. 126 Span­ish Red and No. 48 Hunter's Green; 2 balls of No. 61-D Nu- Ecru.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).
3 bone rings … Red felt.

GAUGE: 5½ sc make 1 inch; 7 rows make 1 inch.

SHAKER (Make 2) … Starting at lower edge with Spanish Red, ch 31. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Break off. Do not turn. 3rd row: Attach Nu-Ecru in back loop of first sc. Picking up back loops only, sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in first sc, * sc at base of next sc (long sc made), sc in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with long sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: * Sc in long sc, long sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 5th row until 43 rows have been completed. Break off. Do not turn.

TOP … Now work in rnds as fol­lows: 1st rnd: Attach Hunter's Green to front loop of first sc, sc in front loop of each sc across, turn; sc in free loop of each sc on 43rd row. 2nd and 3rd rnds: Sc in each sc around. 4th rnd: * Dec 1 sc—to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc—sc in each of next 26 sc, dec 1 sc, place a marker. Repeat from * once more. 5th rnd: Sc in each sc around, de­creasing 1 sc before and after each marker (4 sc decreased on rnd). Re­peat 5th rnd 2 times more. Now, working through both thicknesses, sc in each sc between the markers. Turn. Next row: Sl st in each sc across. Break off.
   With Spanish Red embroider "Salt" and "Pepper" on shakers in chain stitch. Line back with felt, leaving Green top free. With Spanish Red, sc closely around bone rings and sew one to each pot holder.

OIL BOTTLE … Starting at lower edge with Spanish Red, ch 18. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Skip first sc, holding back on hook last loop of each dc, make dc in next 2 sc, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (joint dc made), dc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc, half dc in next sc, make a joint dc over next 3 sc. Break off. Do not turn. 3rd row: Attach Nu-Ecru to first joint dc, sc in same place, sc in next half dc, half dc in next sc, dc in next 7 sc, half dc in next sc, sc in next half dc, sc in tip of next joint dc. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: 2 sc in first sc, sc in each st across, ending with 2 sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: Sc in first st and long sc in base of first st of previous row (an inc), * sc in next st, long sc in next st. Repeat from * across, ending with long sc and sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 5th row until there are 29 sts on row. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Long sc in first sc, * sc in next long sc, long sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat last row until 22 rows in all have been completed. Break off at end of last row. Attach Spanish Red to last st, ch 1 and turn. Continue to work as before for 10 rows. Next row: Work in pattern as before, decreas­ing 1 st at both ends of row—to dec 1 st, work off 2 sts as 1 st. Ch 1, turn. Repeat last row until 13 sts remain. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Sc in each st across, decreasing 1 sc at both ends of row. Ch 1, turn.
   Repeat last row once more. Do not turn at end of last row. Now sc closely along edge of Spanish Red section, insert hook in next-to-last sc made, thread over hook and draw loop through, drop Spanish Red, pick up Nu-Ecru and draw through all loops on hook (color changed). Con­tinue to work around entire edge, changing colors as before to corre­spond with color on each section and making 3 sc in same place at each corner on lower edge. Join with a slip st in first sc of last row. Break off. Make another piece the same way. Hold pieces together and, work­ing through both thicknesses, leave 9 sc free at center of top on each piece, attach Spanish Red to next sc, sc closely around to within the first 9 sc, changing colors as before.

BOTTLE NECK … Attach Red to top and make sc in each sc around top until 8 rnds have been completed. Break off. Attach Hunter's Green and work as before for 8 more rnds. Fold piece and, working through both thicknesses, sc closely across. Turn. Next row: Sl st in each sc across. Break off.
   With Spanish Red, sc closely around bone ring. Sew in place. Em­broider "Oil" in chain stitch.
