This free pattern originally published by Clark's O.N.T. J&P Coats as Bags, Book 228.
MATERIALS: CHADWICK'S RED HEART KNITTING WORSTED, 5 balls (1 oz. balls) of Black and 1 ball of Scarlet ... Bone Crochet Hook No. 5 ... ¾ yard each of felt and buckram ... 1 yard of ribbon ... 3 buttons, ¾ inch in diameter ... 1 small button ... 1 whale bone, 11 inches long.
GAUGE: 3 ½ half dc make 1 inch; 3 rnds make 1 inch.
BAG PIECE ••• Starting at center, with Black, ch 43. 1st rnd: 3 half dc in 3rd ch from hook, half dc in each ch across, 3 half dc in last ch. Working across opposite side of starting chain, make half dc in each ch across ( 84 half dc). 2nd rnd: * 3 half dc in next half dc, half dc in next half dc, 3 half dc in next half dc, half dc in each half dc to next 3-half dc group. Repeat from * once more. 3rd to 6th rnds incl: (Half dc in each half dc to center half dc of next 3-half dc group, 3 half dc in center half dc) 4 times; half dc in each half dc to end of rnd. 7th rnd: Drop Black, attach Scarlet and repeat the 3rd rnd. Break off Scarlet. 8th to 22nd rnds incl: Repeat the 3rd rnd, alternating 3 rnds of Black and 1 rnd of Scarlet. At end of 22nd rnd, sl st in next sc. Break off.
STRAP (Make 1 Black and 1 Scarlet) ••• Starting at center, ch 57. Sl st in 8th ch from hook (buttonhole). 1st rnd: Sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch. Working along opposite side of starting chain, make sc in each ch across. 2nd rnd: Sc in each sc around, increasing at curved ends to keep work flat and making 2 sc in center 3 sc of buttonhole. Sl st in next sc. Break off.
For flap, mark off 5 ½ inches on one short end with pins. Gather opposite end up to measure 11 inches. Cut a felt lining from Bag Piece, omitting flap. Fold Bag Piece in half and cut 1 buckram and 2 felt pieces from back section. Line bag with felt, inserting whale bone at gathered end. Gather marked line of flap up to measure 11 inches. Cover each side of buckram with felt. Stitch one end of this piece to gathered end of flap; stitch opposite end to fold of Bag Piece. Stitch both sides at front of bag to sides of center felt piece. Make a button loop in center of gathered line at end of flap and sew small button opposite button loop. Line each Strap with ribbon. Sew straight ends of each Strap inside Muff. Sew a button 4 inches up from sewn end on each Strap. Sew another button on Black Strap just back of buttonhole. Button Straps over.
