MATERIALS: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 8 balls of Spanish Red, 4 balls each of Turquoise, Yellow, Beauty Pink and Hunter's Green … Clark's O.N.T. Plastic Crochet Hook No. 8 … 16 metal rings, 1 inch in diameter … A pair of soles … 2 yard of round elastic.

Use 4 strands throughout

GAUGE: 4 sc make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

BAG

Starting at bottom with Red, make a chain 8 inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until piece measures 6 inches. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 8th rows incl: 2 sc in first sc (1 sc increased), sc in each sc across, make 2 sc in last sc (another sc in­creased). Ch 1, turn. Work without increasing until piece measures 8 inches. Next row: Work off 2 sc as 1 sc (1 sc decreased), sc in each sc across to within last 2 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc (another sc decreased); dec 1 sc at beginning and ending of each row until 7 more rows are com­pleted. Break off.

SIDE PIECE … Starting at narrow edge with Pink, make a chain 8 inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until piece meas­ures 6 inches. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 12 inches. Break off. Make 3 more pieces the same way, having one Turquoise, one Green and one Yellow.

GUSSET (Make 4) … Starting at narrow edge with Red, make a chain 3½ inches long. Work as for Side Piece until piece measure 2 inches. Complete as for Side Piece.
   Sew Side Pieces to wide sides of bottom. Sew Gusset strips to corners. Sew up seams. Attach Red to top and sc closely around.

HANDLE (Make 2) … Starting at narrow edge with Red, ch 11. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 22 inches. Break off. Sew neatly along edges of long side, stuffing with scraps of yarn to make Handle firm. Sew Handles to Gussets, 3 inches from top. Sew metal rings around Bag evenly spaced, 3 inches from top of Bag.

CORD … Cut 36 strands of Red, each 2½ yards long. Twist these strands tightly, then double these strands and give them a twist in the opposite direction. Pass Cord through rings.

BALL (Make 2) … Starting at cen­ter with Red, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rnds: Inc 3 sc evenly around. Work without increasing until piece measures 1½ inches. Dec 3 sc on next 2 rnds. Stuff firmly with scraps of yarn. Insert end of Cord in opening. Sew securely in place.
   Cut a piece of cardboard to fit bot­tom and place inside Bag.

SLIPPERS

RIGHT SLIPPER—Toe Piece … Starting at bottom with Red, ch 11. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 16th rows incl: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 17th row: Dec 1 sc at be­ginning and end of row. 18th to 25th rows incl: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Break off at end of 25th row. Sew Toe Piece in place on sole.

SIDE … With Red, make a chain long enough to reach around remainder of sole. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Break off Red. 2nd row: Attach Green and sc in each sc across, decreasing 8 sc evenly across. Break off. 3rd row: Attach Red and repeat 2nd row. Continue working in this manner, having 1 row of Pink, 1 Red, 1 Turquoise, 1 Red, 1 Yellow and 1 Red.
   Sew Side around sole. Sew up ends of Side at front. Cut elastic in half, knot one end and draw through last sc row, pull elastic to fit. Knot opposite end.
   Make Left Slipper the same way.
