Materials:
Use one of the following threads in size 30:
Clark's O.N.T. Mercerized Crochet, 3 balls of White or Ecru, or 4 balls of any color.
J. & P. Coats Mercerized Crochet, 3 balls of White, Ecru or any color.
J. & P. Coats Big Ball Best Six Cord Mercerized Crochet, 2 balls of White, Ecru or any color.
Milward’s steel crochet hook No. 10.
¼ yd. lining material.
A 5-inch zipper.

GAUGE: 3 loops make 1 inch; 8 rows make 1 inch.

   Starting at bottom, ch 87 (27 chain sts to 2 inches). 1st row: S c in 10th ch from hook, * ch 3, s c in next ch, ch 5, skip 2 ch, s c in next ch. Repeat from * across (20 loops), ending row with ch 3, s c in last ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in ch-3 loop, * ch 5, s c in next ch-5 loop, ch 3, s c in same loop. Repeat from * across; turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 5¾ inches. Fasten off. Make another piece like this. Then make 2 more pieces, each 1¼ inches deep.

Motifs (Make 12) … Cut off 5 strands of thread, each 8 inches long, to be used for cord. Starting at center, ch 6, join with sl st to form a ring. Holding cord around top of ring and working over it, make 12 s c in ring. 2nd rnd: Working over cord, make 2 s c in each s c around. 3rd rnd: * Over cord make 2 s c in next s c, s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. Repeat 3rd rnd until there are 42 s c in the rnd. Cut off cord. Sl st in each of next 2 s c. Fasten off.

Gusset … Starting at one end, ch 2. 1st row: 3 s c in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 s c in 1st s c, s c in each s c across, 2 s c in last s c. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. 4th, 5th and 6th rows: Repeat 2nd row. 7th and 8th rows: Repeat 3rd row. 9th to 12th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately. 13th and 14th rows: Repeat 2nd row. 15th row: S c in each s c. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the last row until piece measures 5¼ inches. Then work to correspond with opposite end, decreasing instead of increasing—to dec., work off 2 s c as 1 s c—until 3 s c remain. Fasten off.

Handle … Make a chain ⅞ inch long. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row for 9 inches. Fasten off.
   Block all pieces. Sew 6 motifs together with neat over-and-over stitches on wrong side. Then sew one large piece to edge of motifs, easing in the extra fullness. Sew a small piece to center of motifs on wrong side, easing in extra fullness, to form a frill. This completes one side of bag. Finish other side in the same way. Then sew side seams, leaving frill open. Sew gusset in place across bottom of bag. Sew zipper across motifs, at top.

Foundation Lining … Cut a piece of flexible cardboard the exact size of gusset. Cut 2 pieces of lining material slightly larger than gusset. Place these 2 pieces together and machine stitch around edges, leaving a space to insert cardboard. Insert cardboard and sew remaining edges together neatly. Cut 2 pieces of lining material, 7 inches square. Make a French seam across 2 sides and a very narrow hem around lower edge. Sew gusset to lower edge. Then insert lining foundation inside of crocheted piece. Tack gusset in place. Turn under ¼ inch of lining foundation at top and sew to inside of zipper, easing in the extra fullness evenly around. Sew handle to pull of zipper.
