Colorful borders on a white center of Enterprise Yarn make a pretty and practical Hot Dish Mat. Directions for 3 sizes are given to make up a standard set. Heavy enough for the hottest dishes, they make an ideal gift, at low cost.
Try them in White with a colored edge or all white for more formal settings.
MATERIALS—For a Set of 3 Mats:
2 Balls White for centers.
1 Ball color for edges.
Large Mat: 7½ x 10 inches. Center—With White, ch 27, sk last st, 1 sc in each remaining st (26 sc).
Row 2: Ch 1, turn, and working this and following rows through both loops, make 1 sc in last 2 sc, * 1 sc at base of next 2 sc in row below (2 long sc), 1 sc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * 5 times. This completes one rib.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc of last row.
Row 4: Repeat Row 2. Continue, repeating Rows 3 and 2 until 22 ribs (44 rows) are completed. Fasten Off.
End Borders: With White, ch 6, sl st in first st to form a ring. 12 sc in ring. Cut thread 2 inches from work and pull through loop, tight. Turn and join color with sc through a single loop of second from last sc, ** and working this and following rows in back loops only, make 1 sc in next 2 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc. Ch 1, turn, sk last sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc, sl st in next (end) sc. * Ch 2, turn, sk sl st and last sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next 3 sc, sl st in next (end) sc. Repeat from * 7 times, completing 5 ribs. Fasten off. ** Turn and join color with a sc to the same White sc at end of first color row and repeat from ** to **, working over end of White,—covering it up. Make 2 of these pieces for ends of Mat.
Side Borders: Repeat End Borders, but make 16 rows (8 ribs) on each side of center ring. Make 2 of these pieces. Sew 4 Border Sections together at corners, using the colored yarn and going through a single loop of each st. Lap the Border slightly over the edge of Center and working from the back, sew the two together, using a matching colored sewing thread.
Medium Mat: 6¾ x 9 inches. Repeat Center of Large Mat, except start with 23 ch. Make Center 20 ribs (40 rows) long.
BORDERS: Repeat Borders of Large Mat, for 8 rows (4 ribs) on each side of center ring for ends and 14 rows (7 ribs) for sides.
SQUARE Mat: 6¾ inches. Center—Start with 23 ch and make 12 ribs (24 rows) long.
Borders: Make 4 of these Sections, each with 8 rows (4 ribs) on each side of center ring.
