The old fashioned, striped rug shown at lower left on cover is one of the most popular — a heavy rug that will lay flat and, if firmly crocheted, hold its shape and last for years.

MATERIAL: Size 27 x 44 inches—13 balls color, for body; 3 balls white, for stripes; No. 1 steel crochet hook.

With Color, Chain 138 (to be 31 inches long).
Row 1: 1 dc in third st from end of ch, skip 2 sts, * 1 sc and 2 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, repeat from * across, ending with 1 dc in last st (or first st of ch). Turn. 44 complete shells across.
Row 2: Ch 3, 1 dc in top of last dc of previous row, * 1 sc and 2 dc in top of sc st of previous row, repeat from * across, ending with 1 dc in ch 3 at start of previous row. Turn.

(Width should now measure about 27 to 28 inches. A smaller or larger crochet hook may be substituted for the specified size to obtain the correct measurements. Correct measurements will produce a firm rug.)

Repeat row 2 for entire rug, making stripes as follows:

Rug color—18 rows color A = Approx. 5½"

5 stripes approx. 1¼" each:
1st stripe—4 rows color B
Rug color—4 rows color A
2nd stripe—4 rows color B
Rug color—4 rows color A
3rd stripe—4 rows color B

Rug color—72 rows color A = Approx. 21"

5 stripes approx. 1¼" each:
4th stripe—4 rows color B
Rug color—4 rows color A
5th stripe—4 rows color B
Rug color—4 rows color A
6th stripe—4 rows color B

Rug color—18 rows color A = Approx. 5½"

Fringe: 2 strands of color A and 2 strands of color B, 5 inches long. Loop through ch between the shells at each end of rug.
